GOE 3, Part 1: Perspective

September 18, 2007

I was there in March, when the mud and the frigid wind couldn’t stop tens of thousands of us from standing up to say, “Never again!” to the anti-American Left at the first Gathering of Eagles rally.

I was there in May, when the unforgiving sun beat down upon thousands more of us as we stood before Lincoln to honor those who have gone before, and those who go today.

I was there Saturday, when the “peace-loving” hippies threw eggs, kicked shins, pointed fingers, and started fights, all in the name of peace. But this time, I didn’t see them through my eyes, those of a peacetime veteran. I saw them through the eyes of a soldier who has given more of himself than all of those rainbow-clad freaks marching under a coward’s yellow banner.

SPC Jake Altman is a fresh-faced, somewhat shy 21-year-old who lost his right hand and almost lost both legs in Iraq this spring. I met him Friday night at Walter Reed when he came up to us after the counter-protest. With tear-filled eyes, he told us what our support meant to him and his brothers. None of us knew what to say. Here stood this warrior, forever changed by his sacrifice for freedom, and he thanked us. In talking to him, we learned that he was stationed in Germany, where his wife and baby son still reside. We all told him to come to the rally the next day and we’d show him a good time. He grinned and tapped his cane on the ground like a rifleman on a drill team. He’d be there.

Saturday was chilly and windy in the morning, and once I was done singing the Star-Spangled Banner, I went back to the tent to change into more rally-appropriate gear: Shorts, comfortable sneakers, and a t-shirt from Ranger Up that proudly said, “I Club Hippies.” There was a tension in the air that wasn’t present in the previous rallies, and something told me today would be nothing like the others. I had no idea how right I was.

I was thrilled to see Jake and his mother outside the tent, and he promptly discovered how we treat our heroes as I took him around to talk to everyone. Jake got more handshakes and hugs and support and love than he could handle, as many vets and supporters asked to take their pictures with him. He was like a rock star, and everyone wanted to tell him how much they appreciated him. I was as proud as a mama to see fellow Eagles doing what we do.

Jake also had cameras and microphones shoved in his face, as seemingly every media outlet in the country wanted to ask him what he thought of the war. I got my first taste of perspective then, as my normal happiness at seeing the media covering our rally was dulled by watching the way their cameras panned down to zoom in on his prosthetic hand like he was some kind of circus attraction. The interviewers always had almost a predatory look on their faces, and it sickened me to watch them jab the microphone at him with questions like, “Do you think the Bush administration has failed? Where were you injured?” I half-expected them to ask him how many babies he’d killed–at which point I’d have been arrested for assault.

goe-iii-103.jpgOne exception to the rule was Michelle Malkin. We talked to her for several minutes and she asked very politely if she could interview him. She asked the right questions (”What message do you have for the protestors?”), was incredibly respectful and kind, and was patient when Jake had to take a moment to compose himself. While I’ve corresponded with Michelle and traded links to our respective blogs for over two years it was my first time meeting her–and she is a class act.

During the GOE rally, we were alerted to a moonbat in our perimeter who wouldn’t leave. Jake and I walked up to her and asked her what she was doing in our midst, holding up a sign talking about the old “no blood for oil” lunacy. Somehow, the knowledge that Jake had to see this woman and her sign made me so furious that for a moment, I had no words. She smiled at me condescendingly, waiting for me to say something.

“Do you realize that this man standing next to me lost his arm so you have the right to wave that idiotic sign? What is wrong with you? How dare you dishonor our vets this way?!” I sputtered. I quickly learned the reason for her condescension, as she grabbed the dogtags around her neck and pushed them toward me.

“I’m a vet, too,” she told me proudly in that tone of “moral authority” that they love to trumpet. “I served.” I was aghast, and as I turned to look at Jake, his face went flush.

“You’re a disgusting piece of trash,” I spat out at her. Jake walked away, telling her she was a disgrace not even worth his words.

After the rally, we walked a few blocks to the Capitol to wait for the much-touted “die-in,” where thousands of anti-war fools would disgrace the names of our fallen by using them as props in a disgusting mockery of their deaths. We hooked up with Katie O’Malley, writer for Human Events Online, and Kathy Upton, GOE Vermont State Coordinator, throughout the day, comparing notes and sharing much-needed cigarettes as respite from the madness threatening to swirl around us. The moonbats were two hours late for their own event, of course. We joked about how someone must have made a larger-than-needed buy from a corner weed dealer for the pre-march.

We took a spot on the front line, and the word cagoeiii100.jpgme down that the protesters were throwing eggs, epithets and more. Jake’s face was a tight mask as he explained very calmly and coldly–albeit with much profanity–to the police officer in front of us what he would do if someone hit him with an egg. The policeman smiled and told him that while he couldn’t actually retaliate, “freedom of speech” was welcome in any form. We watched the march begin, and I tried to explain to the soldier next to me what he could expect from these people who claim to “support the troops.” The look on his face told me it would be a long, painful day, and I made myself a silent promise that I would protect and defend him, no matter what it took–just like he had for me. No one would dishonor this hero today.

Watching the first moonbats walk by, screaming for the U.S. to “get the hell out of Iraq and stop killing children,” I saw Jake tensing in anger beside me. In two seconds flat, he was screaming right back in a visceral and gut-level reaction borne from paying a high price for someone else’s abuse of the freedom he so graciously helped provide.

“I didn’t go to war and fight to come home to this,” he told an overly made-up woman from the LA Times as he gripped his cane so hard his knuckles turned white. “What the f—?!.”

Thanks for this perspective Kit, and for confirming to me that the freak show these freaks put on Saturday is VERY PERSONAL to OIF Veterans like Jake and I! And based on what I heard from the Gold Star families that were present, I’d say that freak show was EXTREMELY PERSONAL to them as well!

Can’t wait for Part 2 :oD

I was honored to be able to pat Jake on the back. I had no words to express what I felt. Jake, you are a true hero. I too was dumbfounded when I returned from Iraq. What is wrong with these people! You keep on fighting and a lot of us will be there right with you. Tank you Kit for escorting this fine young man and beeing prepared to defend him against these moonbats!

    Cheers,
    Tom
PS: Thanks for singing the National Anthem in a key I could sing along with!

What is the matter with you people? Why do you automatically assume that the people who protest against the Iraq war are anti-American? They are anything but–and are the courageous people who are trying to put an end to this disaster. There are many Iraq veterans in that group. I think you and Jake should be confronting the evil man in the oval office who has sent our young men and women to die and be wounded for a lie and for the benefit of the greedy war profiteers who are making outrageous political and financial gains at the expense of our wonderful young people. Your mission statement is dead wrong! It is definitely possible to honor and support the troops without supporting this war and George W. Bush. I deplore anyone who may have thrown eggs or epithets at the people on your side. But, think about it–why are there even sides in this matter? Why aren’t we all on the same side about this unnecessary and ill-conceived war that is doing nothing but causing the deaths and maiming of thousands of our military as well as innocent civilians? George W. Bush is the divider and not the uniter and he does NOT care about YOU. He is USING you! We need to become united against the evil policies of this evil man and his corrupt administration. Open your eyes to the truth. You are in denial about what is really going on behind closed doors in Washington, D.C.

God bless this kid. We’re lucky to have him in our midst. I never thought to thank him. I’m too low key (not at the protest march though).

We’re gonna beat these American insurgents because they’re wrong. We are on the right side of History.

These remarkable pig-moonbats can not, and will not pravail. Their pig gods that they prey to can not help them.

How long are we going to stand by and engage only in words with this scum of anti-Americans? When we are ready to draw blood i will be there. This young man,THIS HERO,deserves much more than words. If these ignorant fools want to protest our men and women in uniform, then we should make them pay a price for thier insults and arrogance.

  10. Procerus on September 19th, 2007 12:21 pm

Awesome post Kit. Wish I could have met Jake. I look forward to the rest of the story:)

  11. carolb on September 19th, 2007 2:40 pm

larrymddg: No one is protesting against our men and women in uniform. The protest is by patriotic Americans and Iraq veterans against the man who unfortunately is still being allowed to masquerade as our commander-in-chief because they have seen through all of his false rhetoric and flag-waving for political motives. So now YOU want to “draw blood” from these people? Wake up and smell the coffee! THEY are not your enemy! Your enemy sits in a comfy office at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!

  12. Muppet on September 19th, 2007 2:59 pm

Next time any of you look at or are around any of these traitorous anti-war Liberal scum, just look at them and know what the Islamic wackos would do to these people in a “New York” minute. We all know exactly what they would do to them.

  13. carolb on September 19th, 2007 4:52 pm

I’m more concerned about the Bush wacko right now than the Islamic wackos who are a convenient myth in order to keep our American service people in a perpetual and endless state of war! I repeat–the enemy of/traitor to the American people is sitting in the oval office at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! If you want to defeat the enemy you don’t have to go thousands of miles across the ocean to a foreign country in order defeat him! You just have to get a spine and finally stand up to him right here in this country! Especially if you happen to be the damn fools who put him in that oval office in the first place!

  18. carolb on September 19th, 2007 7:49 pm

I do not support the Clintons, neither Bill nor Hill. My candidate for 2008 is Ron Paul, a true conservative — doctor, soldier and U.S. Rep. — the only candidate who makes perfect sense and HE does NOT support the moron in the White House or his disastrous war. You guys didn’t mind impeaching Bill for his escapades with Monica but you won’t impeach Bush and Cheney for causing the deaths and dismemberments of thousands of military and civilian people. That doesn’t sound very “intelligent” or patriotic to me! I care about our troops more than YOU do, because I want them to stay alive and live to an old age with their wives and beautiful little children. I became a widow at age 34 when my children were 2 years old and 2 weeks old because my husband had a sudden fatal heart attack at age 36. I know what these poor young widows are going through who are losing their husbands in an unnecessary war thousands of miles away. These men were healthy, not ill like my husband. They did not have to die. It is shameful and pathetic and while you don’t agree with me about all of this today, I’m telling you at some point in the future you will realize that what I am telling you about your pathetic commander-in-chief sending our wonderful men and women into harm’s way for no good reason is as true and as American as a person can be. You don’t want to hear it but your mission is wrong–from the very first day 4-1/2 years ago until this very moment. I appreciate what you have gone through and honor your service whether it was in Iraq or Afghanistan or Germany or wherever. But this war is wrong or at the least, as John McCain says, it has been handled wrong. I dread thinking about what other disasters will befall us while this incompetent fool remains the leader of the free world. How in the world he got away with fooling everyone again in 2004 that he was going to protect our national security when he was more than AWOL leading up to and on the day of 9/11/01! It’s unbelievable what he has done to our country and to our world in the six plus years he has been allowed to remain in office.

I wonder if IT marched with the pinkpenguins on 9/15.

I certainly saw MANY Ronnie Paulie folks in the Moonbat Armada in the Fruit Loop Parade.

Us Vets For Freedom conducted ourselves as the Professional Warriors we are on Capital Hill on the 18th and many said they were with us.

At the Press Conference, 5 code pinko moonbats were arrested for being just plain stupid. Too bad tasers were not used.

  23. carolb on September 20th, 2007 3:42 am

Yes, Cindy, I agree with you that “freedom isn’t free” and our volunteer military people are outstandingly courageous, but they are being asked to perform above and beyond the call of duty. They are bearing the brunt of this war with multiple deployments and being asked to die so that the fat cats at Halliburton and Bechtel and BP and Conoco and Lockheed Martin, etc. can get fatter and fatter. I don’t believe anymore that it is about the freedom of the Iraqi people and that’s what makes me so angry. If it were only about the freedom of the Iraqi people, our troops would have come home after the capture of Saddam and the deaths of his evil sons. Unfortunately, it is about O-I-L and a permanent occupation.

Hey carolbitch, have YOU ever been to Iraq???????

And do you actually personally know anyone in the military who’s been there????

  25. seo3 on September 20th, 2007 5:32 am

    Eagles,

I am still pumped up by what I happened in D.C. on Sept. 15th … and having CSPAN broadcast the entire rally during prime viewing time was a real coup. Thanks to all you “behind the scenes” people who made this possible.

We probably have lots of new folks looking at this website for the first time who watched that show. They got to meet people like Jake and the Gold Star families for themselves -and they didn’t have to depend on anyone else’s spin about what was being said.

And for the first time, the American public could look at the moon bat rally, and look at the Eagles rally and decide for themselves who stands for America and our troops. These are the very folks we need to reach and first impressions are important at this time.

As satisfying as it is to try to set folks like Carolb straight, we need to look at these front page threads from the eyes of someone who just clicked in to this web site for the first time. What will be their impression of who Eagles are based upon what they read here?

    Carolb

I find your “concern” about supporting the troops condescending and elitist. I can not imagine the convoluted thinking that allows you to think that you know better than the troops themselves what is important to them.

I was a “troop” for 23 years, and if something happened that I disagreed with, I would have hit the door at the first opportunity. Troops are not mindless robots with no free will of their own.

Our troops are also not just a bunch of high school dropouts who are only in the military because they could not get their stuff together. John Kerry’s remark about ending up in Iraq rather than college if you don’t do well in school was much more that a mere slip of the tongue. It conveyed an underlying attitude that I find offensive.

As you get up this morning and go climb into your car to go to work, or school, or whatever, our troops are saddling up to go out on patrol, laying their lives on the line so that you and I can be safe. They are the ones making the sacrifice - and you would be so pretentious as to think that your “concern” about their safety exceeds their own. That you know what is best for them. That their opinion on the subject counts for nothing. How arrogant.

Thanks for a great report Kit. And Jake, OIFvet, and Paul C. - Thanks for your service in Iraq. You’ve been there. You know.

And thanks to our military families who have endured multiple deployments. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed, especially by those of us who have been through that.

    Eagles Up!

  26. carolb on September 20th, 2007 7:00 am

seo3: I appreciate your civil response to my remarks. I think everyone is taking them the wrong way. I have no problem with you and the others who have served so courageously and honorably in Iraq and Afghanistan. I DO have a problem with the people who sent you and continue to send you there and what are their underlying motives. I watched both of the rallies from last Saturday. I had never heard of the GOE and was definitely impressed with those Gold Star mothers and fathers and the young man named Jake. But I saw just as many Iraq vets at the other rally and what they had to say made just as much sense. I have never been impressed with the people who protest just to protest, like Code Pink and A.N.S.W.E.R. I just do not trust the snake who goes before the military for staged photo ops in order to sell his war for oil and yells out “ooh rah” as if he is one of you, but then when he was running for office he mocked and denigrated true war heroes like John McCain, Max Cleland and yes, even John Kerry. Bush is the guy who was able to get into a privileged air national guard unit with a specific request not to go to Vietnam, but he has no problem in sending you guys into horrific conditions and battles. He used to blow up frogs when he was a boy so maybe there is something psychotic going on there. My main point in all of this is to convince you military people that those of us who can’t stand George W. Bush still do support you and honor you in what you have been through and what you have been asked to do. I haven’t drunk the Bush kool-aid that if we don’t stop them over there, they will get us over here. I totally supported Bush, Sr. when he stopped Saddam’s invasion into Kuwait and I supported the stopping of the genocide in Bosnia and Kosovo. I am NOT anti-military and I definitely am NOT anti-American. If you guys had been deployed to stop the genocide in Darfur I could have supported that. I do think that you are in Iraq for reasons other than the freedom of those people. The recent oil deal with the Kurds by Bush crony and financial supporter, Ray Hunt, has convinced me of that. After the fall of Baghdad on April 9, 2003, if Paul Bremer and the CPA had gotten the Iraqi people involved in getting their country in shape instead of doling out all of those lucrative contracts to U.S. companies, I don’t believe that the insurgent thing would have happened. If we went there to liberate those people, we should have liberated them instead of exploiting them.

I am thankful that I attended GOE 3 last Saturday. We all need a periodic recharge of our will and resolve to do what is right and just for our country and this ever-shrinking world. We heard from many brave Americans who served and many whose family members fought and in some cases died for the freedom and liberty we love.
It is reassuring for this old warrior to see young men and women so committed to confronting our enemies despite the enormous personal cost. The love and commitment that permeated this event invigorated all who witnessed it. From the touching vocals to the teary remembrances of fallen soldiers, each moment brought more reverence and reminders of why those who wear the uniforms give so much. I came away with a newfound certainty that we must prevail no matter the cost.
I recognize that even this special event might not be possible without the freedoms we hold so dear. I am humbled and thankful to God for all the blessings our nation enjoys.

    Paul C wrote the following:

“Last time I checked, the Commander-in-Chief IS one of the troops, so by saying you don’t support those who sent us to Iraq to defend your gutless, hate-filled ass, then YOU DON’T SUPPORT THE TROOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!”

My response: When the Nazi military officers were being tried at Nuremberg they said they were innocent of charges because they were only following orders from THEIR “Commander-in-Chief” Adolph! If you don’t think that George W. has been acting like a dictator, very similar to Hitler, then YOU are not a student of history. I personally cannot support the likes of Bush. I don’t think even active duty military should be compelled to be loyal to a dictator! The U.S.A. was NOT attacked by Saddam Hussein or Iraq. If you want to believe the story about 9/11, 15 of the 19 hijackers with boxcutters were from Saudi Arabia. OIF (a.k.a. OIL) was a pre-emptive war of choice. So what is the real reason for our wonderful young people being killed and maimed in Iraq? John Boehner said recently that by “staying the course” with the Petraeus plan until next Spring we will probably lose 1,000 more soldiers and that it was a “small price to pay.” Huh? A small price to pay for lining the pockets of the oil CEO’s and the Bush Crime Family? Hey Paul, you can go ahead and support that bastard, but don’t defame me and condemn me because I can’t!

“BTW, have you noticed that since Presudent Bush chose to fight back, we have not had another 9/11 attack since????”

Have YOU noticed how he has mentioned 9/11 in every speech and has used and exploited that day to threaten the American people and put them in a constant state of fear? THAT is what I call un-American. I’m in America, not in Iraq. And I’m not the one getting our military “assassinated.” The same lies were told to the American people about why we couldn’t leave Vietnam that are being told about why we can’t leave Iraq.

BTW have you ever heard of the Reichstag fire? And how Hitler use THAT to start his aggression in Europe?

Hey carolbitch, I don’t need a so-called “history” lesson from a gutless anti-military exstremist like you!!!! So SCREW YOUR SO-CALLED HISTORY “lesson”!

What we need is for you and the rest of your gutless ANTI-MILITARY lo-life buddies to SHUT THE HELL UP and stop getting my brothers and sisters ASSASSINATED by your gutless ragheaded terrorist buddies!!!!!!

And the UNDENIABLE FACT remains that our nation has NOT been attacked since 9/11, because President Bush had the guts to take on your terrorist buddies ON THEIR TURF!!!!!!

Can you say that about your DRAFT-DODGING, POT-SMOKOING, WOMANIZING, buddy cliton?????????? From what the rest of us see, he was more concerned with his next flink with monica in the Oval Office than he was with National Security!

Choose your side; AMERICA, or the terrorists!

    Sorry, once again, YOU LOSE!!!!!!!!!!!
