Website issues-Update

February 25, 2008

Stand by Eagles. We seem to be having some issues with several areas of the website. I’ve talked to Kit and she is working to find out what’s going on and hopefully fix it.

Please be patient!

Ok…the forum is back. Kit is working frantically to get the new software ready to update the site. The test site looks fantastic, but it’s not quite ready yet. So bear with us, the upgrade will fix all of the little quirks we’ve all been emailing her about! It’ll be great!

Hackers attacking GOE members computers?

January 8, 2008

From Bob : Today at 1545 hours I was on the phone with Chris Hill.

I had started my laptop and logged on to my Verizon Wireless account and I received a notice that my Symantic security software had stopped an attack from a Trojan Horse. I opened the details, wrote down the IP address of the attacking computer and emailed my IT guys with the info.
I read my emails and had to call Chris to clarify something. (BTW, the IP address was traced to a Verizon Wireless card in New Jersey. Verizon has been notified)

I was talking to Chris and watching the screen and suddenly my cursor started moving. It went to Start, then run, then letters started appearing in the run box.

Upgrades and Updates

October 20, 2007

Eagles,

The GOE National site is undergoing some changes.  With all the local events going on around the country, we wanted to make sure you got to see the pictures, videos, and stories.  Also, in light of the last attack on the site a few weeks ago, there are some security concerns we needed to address.

Lastly, we’ve gotten a great deal of feedback from members like you explaining what you need and want on the site.  As a result, I’m upgrading and changing the GOE site over the next 24 hours, and you should see some great changes.  Most importantly, I’m taking great pains to ensure that navigation stays as close to what you’re used to as possible.  You’ll have a smooth experience with the changes as well.

If you’d like to take a peek at the new design, you’re welcome to check it out here.  Do not try to log in, as it won’t work.  Just take a look and enjoy the design, and it’ll be live on the national site over the next day or so!

The Overhaul Has Begun!

August 6, 2007

Things will look a bit crazy for the next 24 hours…please bear with me.  I’m working as quickly as possible. ;)

Thanks!  EAGLES UP!

GOE Overhaul

August 5, 2007

GOE is growing!  We’ve outgrown our current website again, and some of the issues with the theme have not resolved.  As a result, we’ll be upgrading to a new site over the next few days.

Before you scream about how much you hate change, let me assure you that this setup is going to be so much easier to use for all of you.  Here’s what you need to know:

- All usernames and passwords will stay the same.  This layout change will not affect your login.

-  Articles will now appear in sections by category.  This will make it easier for you to keep track of the stories you care about, whether those be After Action Reports, Upcoming Events, or the News Briefings.

- The site will be built more for information than looks.  While we hope you still enjoy how the site looks, our primary purpose is to get you to the information you need as quickly and easily as possible.  That means faster load times, easier access to what you want to see, easier reading, and just a better experience for all.

Stay tuned, excuse the mess, and get ready for an incredible new GOE site.

Generation 3 GOE: New GOE Site

June 24, 2007

GOE has evolved into the Generation 3 website!

GOE requests your patience while we continue with this process.

Kit and Anthony are working around the clock to fix all technological kinks and errors that have occurred during the change-over. Please remember that they have both worked extra hard and put alot of time into the GOE Gen. 3 to bring you a site that is faster, easier, and has more features that have been requested, such as:

  • An integrated forum allowing you to only use ONE username and password for everything on GOE.
  • A chatroom for real-time planning and socialization between Eagles.
  • Easier navigation and readability.

We thank all of you for your patience! Please continue to be patient as we change over.

Also, for all errors or problems regarding the new website, please email webmaster@gatheringofeagles.org. For all feedback, please email Gabi at gabrielle.pike@gatheringofeagles.org. This will ensure that Kit and Anthony have ample time to repair site issues.

Thank You!

Update by Anthony,

I have already received about 1 mill. emails about access to the old forums and it’s content. You may access the old forum data at: Forum Archive Please transfer any important data from the old forums to the new forums. The forum archive will not be around forever, it is insecure and wastes many of the servers resources.

Update by Kit: 0205 hours

We’re aware of the issue in Internet Explorer 7.  It is the ONLY browser that has problems with the site, and so we’re working on this as quickly as possible.

Please don’t send Anthony and I nasty emails about how you hate the site.  This is technologically the most sound version of GOE yet.  Please be patient while we get things squared away.

Also…if you’re having problems getting into the new forum, use your SITE password–NOT your old forum password.

Site Upgrade Announcements

May 24, 2007

Eagles,

First, I would like to announce that the Gathering of Eagles website has been completely moved to its new home. As far as I saw, there was absolutely zero downtime and zero losses of data. The move has been a huge success.

Unfortunately, our databases need a bit of an overhaul. This process will cause minor downtime. However, since the rest of you are out at GOE II, I figure this weekend is as good a time as any. The database maintenance is scheduled for 0200 (Eastern) on Saturday. Downtime will be minimal, a maximum of 5-10 minutes will be experienced.

As the saying goes, “While the Eagles are away, the webmasters will play.” Actually, I’m not sure if that is the exact saying, however, I will be doing a lot this weekend. Work will begin on the new lightweight, fully integrated forum. This forum will be more secure, less prone to SPAM, will eliminate the need for multiple logins, and function faster than the previous.

Eagles Up!

Growing Pains

May 21, 2007

Eagles,

Approximately two months ago, the GOE site suffered major downtime and poor support from its previous host. It was these events that caused me to join the GOE effort. Since then we have moved GOE to a new server and upgraded the site significantly. At the time, the move seemed more than sufficient for GOE and its growing mission and user base.

Now, barely two months after the upgrades, we have realized that the GOE site has outgrown its host once again. This is NOT a bad thing, it only shows the incredible appeal of our effort and the determination of Eagles like yourself. So, once again it is time to upgrade the home of GOE.

Just right-click the link with your screen resolution under the image, and select “Save Target As”. After downloading the image, just find the image in the folder you put it in and right-click it and select “Set as Backgroundâ€?.

Web Buttons Now Available

April 24, 2007

Do you want to link your site to Gathering of Eagles? Well now you can use this nifty little button instead of a regular old link:

Main Button

All you have to do is copy and paste the code below into your webpage code wherever you want the button:
<a href="http://www.gatheringofeagles.org/"><img src="http://gatheringofeagles.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/main_button1.png" title="Main Button" alt="GatheringOfEagles.org" height="100" width="175"></a>

If you’d like to have the Gathering of Eagles site open in a new window (that way your visitors never leave your site), just use this code instead:

<a href="http://www.gatheringofeagles.org/" target="_blank"><img src="http://gatheringofeagles.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/main_button1.png" title="Main Button" alt="GatheringOfEagles.org" height="100" width="175"></a>

We’re working on getting more buttons made for you guys, so sit tight!

By the way, guys, this is my first post! :-)

Tech Updates

April 16, 2007

Gathering of Eagles has officially been moved to a new server, and it was all done with minimal down time.  You may have noticed that the site was down for about 10 minutes last night but that was only during the actual transfer.

Some of the changes we’ve brought you are:

Forums by State:  Instead of continuing to clog up the state info pages for the March 17th event (which are overfilled and outdated), we’ve moved state operations to the forum.  You can find your own forum just for your state by clicking on the Eagle Forums button to the left.  State coordinators will be responsible for appointing moderators, so if you are well-versed in the internet and have any moderation experience, you may want to check with them to see if you can help keep the liberals and spam down.

GOE DVD Store: We will be releasing a professionally-done, 2 hour DVD of the rally in the next few weeks.  You will be able to order this from right here at the website.

Comment Editing: I hope to be able to bring you the ability to edit your own comments soon.

There are other bells and whistles that we plan to bring you in the next few weeks, so stay tuned!  If you have any suggestions for the website or forums, please let us know!  We want you to be able to find the info you need, and have a good experience while at the site.  We care about what you think, so don’t be bashful–just be polite. ;)

Thanks again for all of your support and ongoing dedication to our single mission.

Eagles UP!

GOE’s Great Migration: Downtime Possible

April 11, 2007

It’s me again, your friendly neighborhood webmaster.

Today is Moving Day for GOE.  We’re moving to a new, more secure server over tonight and tomorrow.  Best case scenario is you’ll never notice a difference, it’ll be a seamless move, and everything will go right on as planned.  Worst case scenario is that the site will be down for a few hours.  The nuclear scenario is that you’ll have to register again when it’s all over.

I’m hoping Anthony (our new web guy and host) and I can get this done quickly with minimal fuss.  Keep your fingers crossed!  If the site goes down, don’t worry…it is not being hacked.  We’re just performing maintenance getting everything back to normal on the new server.  Thanks so much for your patience.  EAGLES UP!

Kit

Welcome to GOE Version 2

April 8, 2007

As you’ve probably figured out, GOE has been redesigned. I’ve taken into consideration much of the feedback we’ve gotten from you, and hopefully you’ll find this site easier to navigate, more streamlined, and just plain better to look at. (If you do decide you like the basic layout, thank Heidi. She found the layout and I just made it pretty.)

And now, for your grand tour. Here is a list of changes I’ve made or things you need to be aware of.

1. The site will only show one post on the front page. This makes it faster loading for you, and leaves things a bit less cluttered. In the upper right corner, however, is a list of recent articles so you don’t miss anything.

2. If you haven’t subscribed to the RSS feed and you want to, you can do so with the big button located in the right sidebar. If you don’t know what RSS is, don’t even worry about it. At some point perhaps I will write up a tutorial for folks wishing to get into that.

3. You wanted a prominent forum button, and you got it! Follow the flying eagle to go into the forum you all know and love.

4. I’m in the process of finishing up an image for the GOE store. When it’s done, you’ll be first to know! Until then, please excuse the mess in that tiny section.

5. If you prefer your GOE updates in audio format and served with a side of sarcasm and sass, then you can check out my radio show on Wednesday and Friday nights, where I have all the GOE info you could want, as well as a whole bunch of other things that you’re probably interested in. Check out the Front Line button to find out more.
6. In an effort to keep this train on the track without constantly pounding you for donations, we’ve accepted some small advertisements. Please consider helping to support GOE by buying stuff you probably could use anyway. ;)

7. The GOE Photo Album is coming along nicely, although I do need to answer concerns by a few of you that the anti-war kooks show up in our photos. I toyed with the idea of trying to filter out those photos, but I thought better of it. Sun Tzu said it best: Know your enemy. It’s ugly, it’s despicable, but it’s what we’re up against.

8. The website now has AJAX capability. Long story short, it means you can read comments, add comments, or read long posts right here on the page without having to go to another one. It’s nifty, it’s awesome, it will make life easier for our Eagle Site Comment Security Detail, as I like to call y’all…and you know who you are. ;)

9. I’ve moved the long list of supporting sites and image links to pages of their own…again, to help with load times and clutter. You can find them in the right sidebar at the top.

10. The event calendar is a very nice feature that folks will use often. This will list all upcoming events for GOE in the next 60 days. If you click a particular event, it will take you to the main post for that event, where you can find out more details or chat in comments.

That about does it, I believe. I am still working on certain portions of the site, so please forgive my rutting around for the next few days. Oh, and the login/register link is still at the bottom right side.

If there are any other suggestions or issues, please let me know. I will do my best to make sure the site is easy to work with and deal with. I hope you enjoy the new site. There are many toys here to come.

EAGLES UP!

UPDATE:  If you need to find a post, you can still use the search function (which actually works now), all the way at the bottom of the page.

EMail Updates

March 28, 2007

We have over 1,800 people subscribed to email updates from the site.  Unfortunately, there are a large number of you who are experiencing problems with the form.  I’m getting reports of errors and other weird occurrences.

The email updater is a third-party application.  Without going into too much techie detail, I’ll just say that I’m looking into another option that will allow folks to get their email updates without the crazy errors.  The bad news is that it has to wait until after my FAA exams.  The government doesn’t let you work on aircraft unless you pass, and all that.

At any rate, for those of you who have emailed, please excuse my absence for the next few days.  I have one exam down, and four more exams in the next six days.  Once those are over, I will get to work on fixing some of these errors, I promise.

Thank y’all so much for your patience. I really appreciate it.

– Kit
